Series: Practical Leadership
I was exhausted.
With each email I wrote, my energy was getting lower and lower.
I read one and thought, “Yikes – is this really what I want to say?”
I finally figured out what works, and it freed me.
Take the next minute with me to decide if it works for you, too.
The secret? I put myself in their shoes – then I Iet go.
I wrote the email thinking, “What would I like to read if I were them?” – versus “Let me emphasize what I need out of this.”
1. I did my best to imagine what they were going through = compassion.
2. I asked, “What do they want to hear? How can I help them today?” = empathy.
3. Then I made sure I would enjoy receiving the email = kindness.
Then I did something that may feel scary - I let go of the results.
Wait, what? Aren’t we supposed to work for results?
Yes, and…have you ever noticed the “voice” of emails as people struggle to “get their way”?
If someone is demanding, anxious, negative, “I want this, give it to me NOW,”will you say, “yes?”
“Well yes,” you say, “if they are my manager or on my team… but not everybody.”
Would you like to feel better and get powerful results with emails and all your interactions?
Then write your best email with compassion, empathy, and kindness - and let go of the results.
Be friendly, positive, happy. Serve. Think about what they want and give it to them.
Ask, “How can I be the best version of myself; positive, serving and accepting people as they are?”
Then write the email, do your work, plan/attend the meeting and be okay with whatever happens.
You can handle whatever happens – in the moment that it happens.
Just stop resisting everything!
Do your best work.
Serve others and let go of the attitude, “I must have it this way. It’s my way or the highway, people!”
Be kind and compassionate to yourself and everyone else.
Do your best – with compassion, empathy, and kindness – then let go of the results.
You will feel better. You will perform better. Your life will transform.
This is 1 Minute to effective emails and a happy, successful, peaceful life.
